Is it an eye emergency?
If you think you have an eye emergency, trust your instincts and seek immediate care. Common situations that require urgent eye care include:
- Sudden vision loss or unexpected changes in vision
- Eye infections with pain, redness, or discharge
- Foreign objects in the eye such as metal, glass, or debris
- Chemical exposure causing pain or vision problems
- Cuts or punctures to the eye or eyelid
- Scratches to the surface of the eye
- Sudden onset of floaters or flashes of light
Can I do basic first aid at home?
While there is no substitute for professional emergency eye care, here are a few basic guidelines to follow while on your way to our office:
- Chemical exposure — Flush your eyes with eyewash or sterile saline solution for at least 15 minutes and seek care immediately.
- Foreign object in the eye — Avoid rubbing your eye. Try to gently rinse away the debris with eyewash or sterile saline solution.
- Blow to the eye — Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and seek care immediately.
- Punctured eye or eyelid — Carefully cover the eye without applying pressure. If an object is lodged in the eye, use a disposable cup to protect your eye while seeking care at the ER. Do not attempt to remove the object or rinse the eye.
The best way to protect yourself from eye emergencies is to be prepared. Always wear protective eyewear in situations where your eyes are at risk and keep a basic eye first aid kit on hand that includes a rigid eye shield, sterile eyewash, and sterile gauze.
Do not wait for symptoms to worsen.
